This session will include a 5 minute intro on the topics of the placebo response and challenges to research in CAM.  This will be followed by a 20 minute small group discussion and then a 20 minute large group discussion on 2 peer-reviewed articles on these topics. Fatduck Tavern & Grill is a short walk to and from the Forest Park Blue line station, and has plenty of street and lot parking.  A menu can be found here ($5 suggested donation at the door for event fundraising).


** Mary Sommers has had a medical emergency and will not be making the conference, so her talk will no longer be offered.  To compensate, our exhibitor on Dula practice/Midwifery will contain much of the information she planned to present, as well as a video and slides provided by Mary herself.  We are sorry for any inconvenience.

Within her presentation, Nicole will introduce the fundamentals of dance/movement therapy and discuss the benefits this form of creative arts therapy can have on individuals with mental, physical and emotional health issues.

 

“Combining Complementary Therapies with Traditional Cancer Treatment: Integrative Oncology Review of Research Past, Present and Future”                       

Jeannine Gauthier, PhD

Dr. Gauthier will discuss the use of complementary therapies in patients with cancer. These practices include acupuncture, biofeedback, guided imagery, hypnosis, meditation, massage therapy and yoga. She will also cover the research methods and challenges faced by this upcoming field of integrative care.

 

“What Osteopathic Medicine is All About”                                               

Kurt Heinking, DO, F.A.A.O.

Dr. Heinking will present on why osteopathic medicine was developed, what osteopathic medicine is all about, and why it is a good choice for today’s health care environment.

 

The Anti-Inflammatory Diet: Food as Medicine                            

Geeta Maker-Clark, MD

Dr. Maker-Clark will focus on nutrition and the anti-inflammatory diet, and how using food as medicine is a large part of the Integrative Medicine approach.

 

“Stress, Psychoneuroimmunology and Cancer: A Mindful Approach”

Herbert Mathews, PhD

Psychoneuroimmunology is a framework for understanding the potential impact of the mind and emotions on health. Dr. Mathews will discuss some of the potential mechanisms of this interaction through his work with cancer patients and mindfulness therapy. He will also define and discuss mindfulness based stress reduction (MBSR).

 

Medical Beliefs and Herbal Practices in the Hispanic Population

Joanna Michel, PhD

Dr. Michel will explore common medical beliefs and herbal practices found in both urban Latino communities in the US and rural indigenous communities in Latin America. The involvement of youth in traditional medicine research and plant conservation will also be discussed.

 

“Clinical Hypnosis: Semantics?!”

Robin Ortiz, BS (MS2) with Aaron Michelfelder, MD, FAAFP, FAAMA

This talk will identify the meaning of clinical hypnosis, the five stages of hypnosis, and will illustrate the significance of positive suggestion. The audience will be given examples of how to use hypnosis for sleep, test performance and stress reduction. It will include an interactive demonstration of these techniques.

 

Integrative Family Practice

John Principe, MD

Dr. Principe will talk about his own private practice and how he incorporates elements of nutrition, physical activity, and mindfulness to lead patients to more healthful lifestyles.

 

Music Therapy

Jennifer Rook, MT-BC, LPC

Today Jennifer will give a presentation about using music in rehabilitation medicine.  She will speak about using music therapy to address speech and motor difficulties.

 

“Biofeedback”

Biofeedback is a process that enables and individual to learn how to change physiological activity for the purposes of improving health and performance. The presenters will talk about how Biofeedback is performed and its applications to medical practice.

The Field of Integrative Medicine

Rebecca Schultz, MSN, FNP-BC, HN-BC, CCAP

Rebecca Schultz's presentation will define and differentiate Integrative, Holistic, Alternative and Functional Medicine.  She will outline trends in patient health practices, describe educational opportunities and resources and discuss a case using an IM approach.

 

Integrative Obstetrics

Mary Sommers

Mary Sommers will discuss the safety and validity of home birth as a choice for some pregnant women, and explain how it can be integrated into the current obstetrical care model to provide the best possible care for our mothers and babies.

 

Bridging the Gap between Western Science and Eastern Holistic Medicine

Jinny Suh, L. Ac, Dipl. L.Ac

Today, Jinny will present on Acupuncture and Oriental Medicine and on why treatments work by explaining case studies and demonstrating acupuncture points. She will further discuss how to integrate (TCM) and when to refer patients to a qualified acupuncturist.

 

“Integrative Methods in the Treatment of Mental Health”

Laurie Walsh, LCSW, L.Ac

This presentation will describe the benefits of combining Eastern modalities with psychotherapy.  Specific medical conditions, such as depression, anxiety, and AD/HD and their treatments will be discussed. Attendees will understand how to facilitate appropriate referrals.

 

“Yoga Therapy: Medicine for Prevention”

Susan Walsh, PsyD

This presentation will discuss the history of yoga, some highlights of yoga research, different styles of yoga, and the use of yoga as a supplementary treatment for specific health issues.
